Dear colleagues, 

On behalf of Global Affairs, we would like to thank Mauricio Cañoles, who is stepping down from his role as the general manager of our UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center (UC Davis Chile) as of August 1, 2022. We hope you will join us in thanking Mauricio for his excellent, visionary leadership.

During his tenure as general manager, Mauricio contributed to the growth and reputation of UC Davis Chile and made the center a valued strategic partner for Chilean companies, universities, and the public sector. His leadership resulted in securing important projects to benefit Chile including the “Water Consortium,” “Desert Consortium,” and the “Center for Viticulture Extension.” A catalyst of innovative partnerships, Mauricio connected local Chilean stakeholders to faculty, staff, and students from UC Davis and University of California, including the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) and other UC programs. His passion for bringing the UC Cooperative Extension model to Chile enabled the creation of the UC Davis Chile Extension Platform, a successful digital tool to facilitate productive agricultural decision making, reduce barriers to adopting technologies, and promote innovation.

As general manager, Mauricio led with care for UC Davis Chile’s professional team and created a culture of fluid communication and innovation. Under his guidance, the team thrived and excelled, especially amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and remote work.

With counter-seasonal growing, which is advantageous to year-round research, and a similar climate to Northern California, UC Davis Chile has impactfully nurtured and grown the longstanding partnership between UC Davis and Chile, which has existed since the 1960s. The center, inaugurated in 2015, has managed over 36 million dollars in technology and services contracts with companies and public institutions and for the establishment, operation and consolidation of the center.

More than 100 researchers, academics, and staff from 25 UC centers, institutes, and programs have participated in collaborations led by UC Davis Chile, resulting in four bioproducts patent applications, two licensed biotech technologies, more than 30 articles published in specialized journals of the Chilean agri-food sector, and eight indexed scientific publications. To be sure, UC Davis Chile is developing academic and industry collaborations that contribute to Chile’s economic and social development and enrich the research of UC Davis and UC faculty. The center looks forward to fostering many more mutually beneficial collaborations in the future.  

Professor Dario Cantu, executive director of UC Davis Chile, will assume Mauricio’s role on an interim basis, with the support of Trinidad Eva, the center’s finance and administration manager, until a recruitment for a new general manager is completed.

A nombre de Global Affairs, quisiéramos agradecer a Mauricio Cañoles, quien deja su cargo de gerente general de nuestro UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center (UC Davis Chile) a partir del 1 de agosto de 2022. Esperamos que se unan a nosotros para agradecer a Mauricio por su excelente y visionario liderazgo.

Durante su gestión como gerente general, Mauricio contribuyó al crecimiento y prestigio de UC Davis Chile y logró que el centro se convirtiera en un valioso socio estratégico para las empresas, las universidades y el sector público chileno. Su liderazgo dio como resultado la obtención de importantes proyectos en beneficio de Chile, incluyendo el "Consorcio del Agua", el "Consorcio del Desierto" y el "Centro de Extensión Vitivinícola del Sur". Como catalizador de asociaciones innovadoras, Mauricio conectó a los actores locales chilenos con el equipo docente, el staff y los estudiantes de UC Davis y la Universidad de California (UC), incluyendo al programa de Agricultura y Recursos Naturales de la UC (UC ANR) y otros programas de la universidad. Su pasión por llevar el modelo de Extensión Cooperativa de la UC a Chile permitió la creación de la Plataforma de Extensión de UC Davis Chile, una exitosa herramienta digital para facilitar la toma de decisiones agrícolas productivas, reducir las barreras en la adopción de tecnologías y promover la innovación.

Como Gerente General, Mauricio dirigió con esmero al equipo profesional de UC Davis Chile y creó una cultura de comunicación fluida e innovación. Bajo su dirección, el equipo prosperó y se destacó, especialmente en medio de los desafíos de la pandemia de COVID-19 y el trabajo a distancia.

Con un cultivo contra-estacional, que es ventajoso para la investigación durante todo el año, y un clima similar al del norte de California, UC Davis Chile ha fomentado y hecho crecer de manera significativa la larga asociación entre UC Davis y Chile, la cual ha existido desde la década de 1960. El centro, inaugurado en 2015, ha sido capaz de gestionar más de 36 millones de dólares en contratos de tecnología y servicios con empresas e instituciones públicas, así como para el establecimiento, funcionamiento y consolidación del centro.

Más de 100 investigadores, académicos y staff de 25 centros, institutos y programas de la UC han participado en colaboraciones lideradas por UC Davis Chile, dando como resultado cuatro solicitudes de patentes de bioproductos, dos licencias de tecnologías biotecnológicas, más de 30 artículos publicados en revistas especializadas del sector agroalimentario chileno y ocho publicaciones científicas indexadas. Sin duda, UC Davis Chile está desarrollando colaboraciones académicas e industriales que contribuyen al desarrollo económico y social de Chile y enriquecen la investigación de UC Davis y de la comunidad académica de la Universidad de California. El centro espera continuar fomentando muchas más colaboraciones mutuamente beneficiosas en el futuro. 

El profesor Dario Cantu, director ejecutivo de UC Davis Chile, asumirá el papel de Mauricio de manera interina, con el apoyo de Trinidad Eva, gerente de finanzas y administración del centro, hasta que se complete la incorporación de un nuevo Gerente General.
